A Guitar Learning Roadmap, or How to Learn to Play Fast
Guitar Mastery in 1/10 the Usual Time
Goal
Reach a confident performer level on guitar in a short time by focusing on high-yield practice.
Learning Principles
- Minimum theory, maximum practice — learn only what you can apply right away.
- Skill separation — playing = motor skills + rhythm + chords + theory. Develop each part separately.
- 80/20 method — master the 20% of techniques that deliver 80% of the results.
- Play with music — practice with a metronome and backing tracks.
- Clear time management — structured, short sessions.
Learning Plan
1. Week 1: Basic Control of the Guitar
- Days 1–2: Basic chords: C, G, D, Am, Em.
- Example progression: G → D → Em → C (used in thousands of songs).
- Days 3–4: Chord changes with simple strumming patterns.
- Quarter-note strumming: ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓
- Days 5–6: Playing with a metronome (40–60 bpm → 80 bpm).
- Exercise: Play chords exactly on the metronome click.
- Day 7: First simple song (“Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”).
2. Week 2: Developing Speed and Clean Tone
- Days 8–9: Sixteenth-note strumming pattern.
- Pattern: ↓ ↓↑ ↑ ↓↑
- Days 10–11: Fingerpicking (PIMA — classic pattern).
- PIMA: Thumb (P), index (I), middle (M), ring (A).
- Example: “Nothing Else Matters” (Metallica).
- Days 12–13: Barre chords (F and Bm, practice without buzzing).
- Day 14: Second song (“Wonderwall” — Em7, G, Dsus4, A7sus4).
3. Week 3: Dynamics and Variety
- Days 15–16: Riffs and power chords.
- Example: “Smoke on the Water” (Deep Purple).
- Days 17–18: Easy solos.
- Example: The opening of “Nothing Else Matters”.
- Days 19–20: Open tunings and alternate chords.
- Day 21: Improvisation with the pentatonic scale (see the “Pentatonic” section).
4. Week 4: Advanced Playing
- Days 22–23: Bends, vibrato, legato (see the “Additional Techniques” section).
- Days 24–25: Arpeggios and fingerstyle.
- Example: “Tears in Heaven” (Eric Clapton).
- Days 26–27: Rehearsal of the full technique set.
- Day 28: First complex song (“Hotel California” — Eagles).
Practical Exercises
Warm-up (5 minutes before each session)
- Chromatic scale: play 1-2-3-4 across all strings.
- Alternate picking: alternate up and down strokes with the pick.
- Finger stretching: place fingers one at a time on frets 5-6-7-8.
Core Exercises
- Chord changes: 4 strums per chord → 2 strums → 1 strum.
- Rhythm: Play at different tempos (slow down and speed up).
- Backing tracks: Use Guitar Pro or YouTube.
Additional Techniques
A Minor Pentatonic
The pentatonic scale is a 5-note scale that’s convenient for improvisation.
Am shape (5th fret):
| e | —————-5–8– |
| B | ————5–8—— |
| G | ——–5–7———- |
| D | —-5–7————– |
| A | —-5–7————– |
| E | —-5–8————– |
- Used in blues, rock, and metal.
- Play through it in order and come up with your own riffs.
Bend, Vibrato, Legato
- Bend — pushing the string upward to change the pitch.
- Example: Play the 7th fret on the 3rd string and bend upward.
- Vibrato — rocking the note up and down for a richer sound.
- Example: Hold the 8th fret and wiggle the string.
- Legato (Hammer-on and Pull-off) — transitions without picking.
- Example:
e |——5h7——| (Hammer-on: fret the 7th without picking again)
e |——7p5——| (Pull-off: lift the finger from the 7th, leaving the 5th)
- Example:
Arpeggio
- An arpeggio is playing the notes of a chord one at a time.
-
Example: C major arpeggio:
e |——0——–|
B |—-1—1——|
G |–0——-0—-|
D |————2–|
A |———-3—-|
E |—————| - Used in: classical music, ballads, fingerstyle.
Progress Tracking
- Record video once a week and review it.
- Check chord change speed.
- Evaluate tone clarity.
Summary
After a month, you’ll be able to play popular songs confidently, master basic techniques, and be ready for more complex arrangements.
Tips
- Don’t memorize blindly — understand what you’re doing and why.
- Vary your exercises so you don’t lose motivation.
- Don’t skip days — 20 minutes daily is better than 3 hours once a week.
Good luck learning guitar!
